Sunday was the absolute perfect day for reading – overcast, the clouds teasing me with rain, and nowhere to be but home with my coffee, my dog, and this book! I figured I better write my review before my brain gets all mixed up with the next one I read – that seems to be happening a lot lately and I’ve been skipping reviews! I’m going to dig deep and recall my last 3 though (probably, lol!) so don’t worry, we’ll just review in reverse reading order – hm, kind of fitting with this story, actually.
What is it about?
Jen and her husband Kelly witness their teenage son, Todd, murder someone in front of their house. Todd gets arrested and both Jen and Kelly follow him to the police station to sort things out but they’re sent home because Todd is staying overnight no matter what. In the morning, Jen wakes up and notices her son is home and confronts him but he has no idea what she’s talking about. Jen is living yesterday’s day with tomorrow’s knowledge. She figures she can just stop it from happening tomorrow by being proactive today, only when she wakes up tomorrow it’s actually the day before yesterday.
Jen has somehow entered a time loop and each day she learns new information that she thinks will help her prevent Todd from committing murder in the future but every night she goes to sleep and the following morning wakes up to an even earlier day in her life. Going back hundreds of days to try to learn what she thinks she is suppose to in order to prevent what seems to be inevitable. She’s stuck further in the past, finding things out that she didn’t want to know, trying to discover the missing piece so she can get back to the present.
What does it have?
- Time Loop
- Murder Mystery – Who’s that victim?
- Organized Crime
- Motherhood Commentary
I’m glad I was able to get this book with a quick turnaround time at the library – I put it on hold Friday, it was available Saturday, and I read it Sunday – all digitally! I was looking for something to read and this came up as a suggestion. I noticed it was a Reece’s Book Club pick and I’m not often disappointed by those so I just went with it. Sometimes I wonder what makes a mainstream book club pick worth being, well, picked.
Is it worth reading?
Solid yes. I enjoyed it and it had just enough complexity to keep me paying attention. There are also some touching moments with Jen and Todd while she is stuck in the time loop that make you appreciate being present when you spend with loved ones.
